Britain logged record number of COVID-19 infections in a day with 129,471 new cases reported on Tuesday. On Monday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had said that no new restrictions will be imposed to curb the spread of the virus this year.
The reported data did not have the numbers for Scotland and Northern Ireland owing to the differences in reporting over the Christmas holidays. The 12,378 cases reported for Wales included figures that would have been reported in previous days.
The previous record high of daily new cases was reported on December 24 when 122,186 infections were recorded. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have imposed stricter rules, as have several other European countries which are witnessing a surge in Omicron cases… (Times of India – Reuters, December 28, 2021)
